Even though participants in both groups felt sad, the two types of sadness were associated with distinct physical and psychological responses. These meanings may map on to different experiences.įor example, a study published in 2017 in Frontiers in Psychology compared sadness caused by imagining the death of a loved one and sadness caused by imagining failing to reach a goal. Researchers who study sadness, including Forgas, acknowledge that the word “sadness” has multiple meanings. People who are sad might say they feel lonely, distressed, depressed, anxious, or grief. Increased or decreased skin conductance (a measure of a small electric current in the skin that can indicate someone's level of arousal or emotional response, according to APA).According to a review published in 2020 in Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews, the following can be signs of sadness: You can recognize sadness in yourself and others through its telltale characteristics. However, if you experience symptoms including fatigue, changes in your appetite, withdrawing from friends, feeling low energy, and the inability to feel happy over a two-week period to the extent that they’re interfering with day-to-day functioning, consider talking to your doctor about getting screened for a mood disorder. Depression doesn’t look the same in everyone, which can make it difficult to recognize sometimes, Kross notes. It can be tough to tell whether you’re experiencing everyday sadness or depression. How Can You Tell if It’s Depression or Everyday Sadness? That differs from everyday sad moods, which occur all the time to all of us. “It is a very serious disease that has very serious consequences,” says Forgas. “It’s really about the degree and duration,” says Kross.ĭepression, in contrast to sadness, tends to be debilitating, making it difficult to perform everyday tasks, according to the APA (PDF). But when sadness is experienced intensely and for a long time, and is accompanied by other hallmark depression symptoms (lack of interest or pleasure in most activities, fatigue, and changes in appetite), it may indicate the presence of a depressive disorder. In nondepressed individuals, sadness comes and goes. But to experience sadness is not the same as having depression. The Difference Between Sadness and DepressionĪccording to the APA, persistent sadness is one of the two defining symptoms of a major depressive episode. Withdrawing to reflect is a very different response from the quick action of anger, says Dr. In the aftermath of the unexpected rejection, sadness might cause you to step back and try to better understand what implications that loss has for you. Think about a time you’ve experienced a major rejection, says Ethan Kross, PhD, a professor of psychology and management and organizations at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, who studies emotion and self-control. The emotion causes a slew of changes in thinking and behavior (more on that later), some of which Forgas detailed in a paper published in Current Directions in Psychological Science. Sadness tells you that you’re in an unfamiliar situation so you need to look out and be careful, he says. But now researchers believe that sadness acts as a mild alert, says Dr. “Anger is useful in overcoming resistance,” says Joseph Forgas, a doctor of science in psychology and Scientia Professor of psychology at the University of New South Wales in Sydney.įor a long time, researchers didn’t know the purpose of sadness. So when you’re angry, you might have tunnel vision and feel motivated to deal with some kind of problem. The Difference Between Sadness and Angerīoth sadness and anger can feel unpleasant and distressing, and researchers sometimes lump the two together under the umbrella of “negative affect.” (This category also includes shame, guilt, anxiety, fear, and irritability, according to research.) But sadness and anger are distinct emotions with different purposes, as other research has outlined.Īnger often occurs in response to a perceived injustice, according to the APA. Sadness is “an emotional state of unhappiness, ranging in intensity from mild to extreme and usually aroused by the loss of something that is highly valued,” according to the American Psychological Association (APA). According to Kantar’s data, 12.2% of females reported to be using telehealth, compared to 8.8% of males. The numbers are pretty close in terms of gender and use of telemedicine, but females appear to be using these services more than men. Telehealth offers both convenience without the commute, and affordability compared to traditional in-person doctor visits. More specifically, 11.7% of those who live in urban parts are currently using telehealth services, while just 6.6% of rural residents are participating in virtual healthcare. Even though patients who live in rural parts would likely benefit more from telehealth because of lack of proximity to healthcare facilities, they are not using telehealth services as much as those who live in the city. Interestingly, however, urban dwellers seem to be using telehealth more than rural citizens. Rather, the distribution is rather even throughout the nation. There is no particular region that stands out as a dominant participant in virtual health care. About one-fifth of older millennials in the 25 to 44 year age group use telehealth, and 11% of those between the ages of 45 to 64 years participate in virtual care.Īmericans all over the US appear to be using telehealth services relatively equally. Those aged 65 years and older were the least likely to use telehealth services at only 5.4%. According to recent data gathered by Kantar, about one-quarter of all Americans using telemedicine fall within the 18 to 24 year age group. Not surprisingly, younger Americans are making better use of telehealth visits than their older counterparts. Telehealth has also introduced a more affordable approach to medical care, with savings of anywhere from 10% to 15% for doctor visits.īut who exactly is taking advantage of telehealth in the US? What demographics are shaping the virtual medical care landscape? Telehealth is providing patients with a convenient way to connect with their healthcare practitioners, particularly those who live in rural areas and may not have easy access to conventional medical facilities. While there are certain obstacles to overcome when participating in telemedicine - including access to technology and learning curves with digital devices to facilitate virtual visits - more and more Americans are embracing this form of health care. In fact, the use of telehealth has skyrocketed over the past year as both patients and physicians attempt to minimize as much in-person physical contact as possible. Americans all over the US are using telehealth as a means of interacting with their healthcare professionals, though the younger demographic appears to be participating at higher rates than older Americans.Īs the COVID-19 pandemic continues, so does telehealth. The first episodes of season 2, then, are like a course correction, one that sees Will and his cluster go on the offensive, upending Whispers’ attempts to locate him, while at the same time deducing a way to exploit the two-way street that is the villain’s invasive psychic connection to undermine his position at BPO. Whispers into an omnipresent boogieman, thereby overriding the importance of each character’s individual storyline – many of which wound up feeling like they had completely stalled out or were so propulsive they overshadowed the stalemate between Will and Whispers. It was a tricky conflict that established a compelling threat, but effectively took Will off the board and turned Mr. Whispers from locating and presumably eradicating his cluster of Sensates is a welcome introduction to the new batch of episodes, one that effectively gets the series out of the corner it painted itself into back in 2015.īack then Will was in a drug-induced haze conducted under the watchful eye of Riley. In the first episode back (and well into the second), Sense8 spends the majority of its time addressing the cliffhanger that brought the first season to a close. Whispers) and, surprisingly, a hint of humanity that affords an otherwise black-and-white situation the chance to investigate more enticingly gray areas than it did before. Much of that has to do with fleshing out the conspiratorial end of the equation, giving it a face (aside from Terrence Mann’s Mr. Thankfully, the start of season 2 demonstrates the ways in which Lana Wachowski and Straczynski have managed to add more action, narrow the series’ focus, while still managing to keep the expansive character dramas running full steam ahead. Smith), Nomi (Jamie Clayton), Sun (Doona Bae), Wolfgang (Max Riemelt), Lito (Miguel Ángel Silvestre), Capheus (Toby Onwumere), Riley (Tuppence Middleton), and Kala (Tina Desai) – not to mention Naveen Andrews’ Jonas and Daryl Hannah’s Angelica – was so big, and the writers’ desire to turn each episode into a platform to tackle topics both political and personal, all while underlining the common Wachowski theme of a unifying human experience, that it was difficult to discern what, exactly, the main story was. While the profusion of narrative options at its disposal make Sense8 into a fascinating model of the binge-watch era, that wealth of material also worked to its detriment in its first season. If you’re not too keen on watching a hacker disrupt the workings of a shadowy multi-national conglomerate, just wait there’s a Korean prison break/revenge drama and a German crime saga happening at the exact same time. The sheer abundance of narrative options effectively renders Netflix’s vast, earnest, and often visually sumptuous series into a storytelling buffet. That’s understandable, as the series is a creative big swing that wants to mix a massive, eight-character narrative with a sprawling exploration of the human experience that also offers political thriller, science fiction, romance, and crime-thriller subplots for the discerning viewer. Michael Straczynski’s Sense8 took a compelling idea and made it diffuse by too often concerning itself with an evaluation of… well, pretty much every idea. I think it should be shown in schools and jails and houses of parliament everywhere.Season 1 of the Wachowskis and J. I know this will sound hyperbolic, but I am convinced that Sense8 is not only one of the best TV shows ever made, but also one of the most fully realized and revolutionary artistic statements of this young millennium. One could argue it's also an allegory about the internet, and I think that is probably true, but only to a point, since it is ultimately a fabulously non-zombiefied take on post-human being. Plus it roars with graphic polysexuality, which is in itself quite a challenge to most viewers to extend their own empathetic abilities beyond TVs traditional comfort zones. It's a sort of tantric meditation on human frailty and embodied cosmic unity squirted through a stylish super-charged ultra-hip action filter. It looks great, feels better and sounds very cool too. Sense8 was a remarkable exploration of the limits and potential of human empathy, expressed in an astonishing number of emotionally charged permutations and manifestations, from polymorphic sexuality to global interculturality to the telempathic fusions between complete strangers that are at the heart of the very cool plot. It was sheer genius and their snobbery led to it being cancelled. Damn the lazy uptight critics again for dumping on Sense8. It also blends together some newer covers together with the old Garage Days Re-Revisited EP for a full-featured experience of surprisingly kickass and faithful covers of the original source material. is a 2-disc collection of covers from Metallica's vast array of influences spanning 70s rock, NWOBHM, and hardcore punk among other styles. Getting something like this out of late 90s Metallica was a bit of a surprise, but a pleasant and much needed one at that. It's probably best summed up in Hetfield's failure to properly express emotion in their cover of Thin Lizzy's "Whiskey in the Jar." But it sure as hell is better than St. This album is probably not worth a listen all the way through, since it's over two hours long. Most of the songs on here are a poor imitation of the original. Providing the listener with mediocre covers, this could only be enjoyed by someone who had never heard any of the originals or who is a complete metal novice and just wants to buy every Metallica album (so my 11-year old self). However, all these songs are ruined by James Hetfield, who seems incapable of doing any style of vocals besides his usually high-pitched yelling. Besides the oddball classic rock covers on here, there's plenty of punk, including bands like The Misfits and Discharge. The rare standout is a slightly touching version of Bob Seger's "Turn the Page," but replacing the emotional horns section of the original with Kirk Hammett's repetitive lead guitar nonsense didn't really help the song much.Īs I sort of mentioned before, a lot of the covers on here were originally non-metal, meaning this album could be partly responsible for the modern craze of turning every song imaginable into a metal song. But much of it, such as their cover of Blue Öyster Cult's "Astronomy," Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Tuesday's Gone," and Black Sabbath's "Sabbra Cadabra" fail to inspire. Some of the covers, of course, are classics, such as "Blitzkrieg" and "Am I Evil?" and the whole Garage Days Re-Revisited EP, all of which is inserted in the dead center of the album. So instead, they took a collection of covers they had already released, recorded a handful more, and then bundled it all up and disguised it as an album. To cover classic metal and punk songs in the grungy alt-rock style of their preceding albums would have been to prove themselves as sellouts. While most of this album has Metallica's classic Justice-era sound (plus bass) throughout, it's really not that big of a deal considering that they wrote 0% of the material on it. Anger, Metallica was like "hey, all our fans hate us so let's do some covers!" While maybe it could have been pulled off successfully, the result was extremely disappointing. Having just released the perpetually disappointing Load and Reload just a couple short years earlier, and half a decade before releasing their nadir album St. Making a 27-song cover album is a bad idea for any bad but it was an especially poor choice for Metallica, who were already at the low point of their career. The tiny labelling of route names within their respective route lines is next to useless: another approach should be used to identify routes for color-blind users. The labelling could still use some work – different sizes of type are used, and the labels on the south-western leg of the Red Line could easily be set horizontally instead of at an angle. The extra space afforded to downtown SLC works wonders for clarity and usability – gone are the ugly lines pointing to stations from awkwardly placed labels. In the grand scheme of things, this map is really pretty standard – there’s nothing truly memorable about it, nor is the design particularly outstanding – yet it’s still streets ahead of the current official map. The lines were drawn for black-and-white printing and accessibility for the color-blind. Then transfer to a northbound (towards Howard) Red Line train to the Addison stop. Transit maps should be simple and easy to route.įor clarity, some station names that had only only numbers were replaced with an hypothetical neighborhood name. From OHare: Take the Blue Line and get off at the Jackson stop. This map was created by CLF as an attempt to show how a UTA rail map can be laid out clearly while avoiding unnecessary bends in the lines, and extra lines connecting station names with the station dots. I’ve feautured another unofficial map of this system previously (December 2012, 3.5 stars), but this one is interesting because it contains a message seemingly aimed at the UTA, almost pleading for better map design. Following on from yesterday’s post, here’s an unofficial map of Salt Lake City’s TRAX and FrontRunner rail system. The Utah Transit Authority ( UTA) is a special service district responsible for providing public transportation throughout the Wasatch Front of Utah, in the United States, which includes the metropolitan areas of Ogden, Park City, Provo, Salt Lake City and Tooele. |
